And if so, what motherboards & cpu would you recommend.
I'm currently using an ASUS K8V beside an Athlon 64 3000+.
I'm looking to do this without spending the world.
Thanks for your facilitate.
Making a unusual computer. Should I ditch my DDR / AMD motherboard sckt 754, and move up to socket 939?
Socket 939 is no longer produced. The best CPU you can get for it is the AMD 4800+. If you want to liberate costs, then this processor is well-mannered since it is dual core. I am sure there are places that still enjoy 939 boards and CPUs (probably used on the CPU). ASUS makes some nice motherboards for 939. Their A8R column can even handle Crossfire.
I would fly to socket AM2. Those boards are plentiful and not expensive. You will need to attain new memory since they are DDR2, but DDR2 memory is pretty cheap. Most AM2 motherboards are also going to be compatible beside the new Phenom processors (with a BIOS upgrade) that will be released next this year.
be patient, its worth waiting for amd quad
Biostar GeForce 6100-M9 Socket 939 mATX MB is individual around $55-$60 and allows up to 4GB memory + get your processing speed up to 200 MHz.
