There are a couple of reasons that this may arise. First thing would be to find a dos based start disk near a utility to check the hard drive. You state that the drive is a western recon, Is it possible that you designed western digital. Go to their web site @www.wdc.com and download the notes life guard utility to interview the drive. The second cause may be due to a cd or dvd drive issue.
