what type of motherboard would you recommend for gaming (personal experience if available)?

The strange p35 chipset from intel has a moment ago come out so look out for new boards that enjoy it and support DDR2 and DDR3 (none as yet). (If you don't need the current mobo yet hang about for the new AMD phenom's)
