I have hear conflicting stories about gaming and the exotic intel processors, not sure if to try it or go near a athlon.
Any thoughts/advice?

that would be the best for you since more cache helps you soak up gaming and the FSB is also not bad 1066Mhz will relieve you process the data at a faster rate which help to burn your DVD faster.
You can also over clock it...

$2500 is like mad of cash to spend on a PC and you can take a great onr too. Get the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It's the best on the marketplace right now and it looks close to it will stay that way for presently. I would recommend a AlienWare or a Voodoo. These computers are built primarily for gaming and are quite expensive but you can customize them to you requests.
